What Is Gross Domestic Product (GDP)?

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the total monetary or market value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a specific time period. As a broad measure of overall domestic production, it functions as a comprehensive scorecard of a given country’s economic health.

Which countries are in the top 5 for 2019? If you think about it, are there any countries whose rankings have not changed at all? I wonder if any of the top five GDP countries have switched order in recent years? These are just a few of the things I would like to find out.GDP is easily available from the World Bank website, so I decided to analyze time-series GDP change.

What has been the trend in GDP since 2000 for the top five GDP countries today?

Considering the graph of the transition, could it be that the ranking is not the same all the time? So I decided to write a graph of the top 6 for 2019.

Since 2000, the U.S. has been at the top of the GDP list. China has continued to grow its GDP since 2000. And India also appears to be growing in GDP like China before in recent years. However, I don’t understand the difference between the top 5 countries and the top 6 countries in this graph. Let’s look at the following graph and table.

Oh, so that’s how India’s GDP overtook the UK’s in 2019.

Conclusion

  • Since 2000, the US has remained the top GDP.
  • Since 2000, China’s and India’s GDPs have continued to increase, resulting in them being among the top five in GDP in 2019.
